I'm a sucker for romance. I don't know why... anyway, so my question is what do you feel romance contributes to this book? Do you think it wouldn't be much of a book without it?
I think this is an interesting question, one in which answers could vary based on interpretation of the question. I definitely think romance plays a huge role in the book. Romance drives Gatsby to chase Daisy and throw extravagant parties to try and attract her attention. Without romance there wouldn't be much of a book at all. Tom wouldn't have a lover, if he even had Daisy. In my opinion the book is centered on romance and if it were pulled out the entire story would fall apart.
I think there is a lot of romance that influences this bool. Without the romance, I have to admit even less would be happening in the book. It would just be about a stockbroker who gets invited to a bunch of parties and doesn't judge people. Gatsby probably wouldn't be rich if he didn't work that hard to win Daisy back. So romance is kind of a bid deal in this book, without it we wouldn't have the great Gatsby.
I believe that the romance is pretty much the foundation of this book. Gatsby is rich because he wants to try and win back Dasiy, without that motivation to earn money Gatsby would probably never have lived in his mansion, and Nick never would have met him, and the books title has Gatsbys name in it, so a good chunk of the plot and the title would be different. There is also a lot of complicated realtionships going on too. Dasiy is Nicks cousin, Daisy is married to Tom, Nicks friend from Oxford, Tom is in an affir with Myrtle, and Gatsby is madly in love with Dasiy. So I would have to say that the romance is a big part of the plot line, and like Monica stated with out the romance we wouldn't have the great Gatsby.
All three of you have pointed out very good points, and I most defininately agree. Romance is a huge part of this novel, and as Monica said, the book would not have much going on. A lot of the substance of this book is centered around Gatby's love for Daisy, and without that, there isn't a book. But, as much as this book is about romance, I don't believe it is the main thing to be watching out for while reading.
